bullet  General Notes:

1900 Census in Columbia, IA has his name as Ray Chapman.

When Roy was first married he was a chauffeur for a medical Doctor in Arkansas City, KS. They made urgent calls to the country and the Dr. said to drive like Hell and Roy ran over the chickens and the Dr. said Oh No!, I'll have to pay for the chickens.

He was a farmer and rented the farms therefore, he was forced to move from farm to farm. He lived in Oklahoma about 9 miles west and 1 mile south of state line southwest of Arkansas City, KS. His son's (Ted & Bob) were born on this farm. He moved 1/2 mile south & a mile East when Ted was in the 2nd grade. Ted went to Landen School. He lived there only about 1/2 year. He then moved 2 miles south and 1 mile east. (This was 2 miles east of Harry Onstott's farm which was 4 miles North & 5 1/2 miles west of Newkirk, OK). Then he moved 1 mile west then 2 north and 1/2 west. Then he moved 1 mile west.

Roy was primarily a crop farmer raising wheat, oats, corn and barley. He had milk cows, pigs, horses, and chickens. He used horses to pull plows on the farm. His 1st tracker was a Fordson and when rubber tires came out he got knobbies from Montgomery Ward. He had a small tub of oil which was then lighted as a fire and put under the tractor to warm up the oil in the tracker so it would start. He worked on a thrashing machine as a separator. The thrashing machines were pulled by a tractor, a steam engine in the early days. They would haul the shocks by horses and wagons from the wheat field. They would mow and shock the wheat.

He owned an Overland car when Ted was born. Roy bought a car called Willis Knight. He bought a Model T Ford coupe which was about a 1925-26 model. He bought a 34 Ford and then bought a 36 Ford two door.

Then he moved to Kansas 1.5 miles south of the Hackney elevator probably in the mid 1960s.
Roy then moved to town in Arkansas City when he was 80 years old where he lived the rest of his life. He drove a wheat truck during harvest when he was 80 years old.
